It’s natural for would-be-parents to be anxious with many queries. And a gynecologist whom you trust can ease this anxiety. Periodic checkups during pregnancy are not only a must for an uneventful and healthy pregnancy and to ensure both the baby and the mother are healthy, they are opportunities to have candid conversations with your doctor. It’s a time to plan the beautiful journey to parenthood, get answers to all your questions and resolve all your worries. These check-ups are a mix of
to anticipate & address any potential risks.
They help build up a rapport between the patient and her doctor that helps immensely during delivery. It is time to plan the course of your pregnancy and the mode of delivery. Even if everything is going well it is essential to attend these check-ups to identify any potential risks and to address them.
One of the most beautiful moments is giving birth to a new life. And most women are anxious about how they deliver. I believe in keeping this moment natural and beautiful. An open communication between the doctor and the would-be mother and father and sharing full information has helped me make this time beautiful for my patients through normal deliveries. It is natural to be worried about the pain but with proper care and management, the pain can be eased and the journey be made smooth for the mother-to-be.
The word “operation” scares almost everyone. And this doubles during pregnancy since two lives are involved. But sometimes, delivery by operation is the safest way for the mother and the child. There are many questions that come to mind like “How much time will it take?, Will the husband be allowed inside?, How soon would the mother recover and what would be the post-operation effects? And many more.
I strongly encourage all parents-to-be to have a candid conversation and open up about all their fears and anxieties. There are a lot of misconceptions about C-sec deliveries. Every patient is different and so course of action has to be customized for everyone. A heart to heart conversation between the doctor and the family ensures a happy mommy and happy baby.
Some pregnancies need extra care. Medical conditions or complications should not come in the way of experiencing the joys of motherhood. I have successfully delivered babies for patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, kidney diseases, preterm labour pains, pregnancy in the tubes, previous history of abortions, preterm birth or Cesarean. Patients with previous surgeries, fits during pregnancy, with low lying placenta, thyroid diseases, twin pregnancy, IVF pregnancy and other medical illnesses during pregnancy.
Giving birth is the start of a beautiful journey. But the journey is not smooth sailing and most women experience challenges post delivery. These challenges may be related to post delivery care of mother to breastfeeding. A lot of women also experience post-partum depression. Unfortunately, the new child becomes the centre of attention and care for mother takes a backseat. However, this is also the time that the new mother needs lot of care, assurance and guidance.
I encourage new mothers to reach out to me to discuss every small and big issue. Sometimes all they need is reassurance, sometimes they need guidance and sometimes they may need treatment. Being a mother along with a doctor helps me understand their perspective and support them through this journey.
An active sexual life also entails taking care of contraception and not landing in an unwanted pregnancy. While there are many ways of birth-control, most women wonder which one is the best. Well, there is no one best method of birth-control.
Today, there are many methods available including condoms, contraceptive pills, multi-load copper T, contraceptive injections to name a few.
A candid conversation with your gynecologist will help you understand which method is best suited for you. I have helped women understand the advantages and side effects of every option and helped them decide on the one that suits them based on their requirement, medical condition etc. A lot of my patients opted for multiload cooper T that was inserted and removed comfortably in the OPD.
When we feel our family is complete, we can opt for a permanent way of birth-control. The permanent method of avoiding pregnancy is tubal ligation also called a family planning operation. Done laparoscopically, it is comfortable for the patient and leads to early mobilization and better cosmesis. Usually, the patients are discharged the same day.
Women can opt for family planning operation along with the Cesarean to avoid another surgery. Since it is a permanent method, I recommend both partners to discuss this before taking a decision. It is important for women to know that this operation does not affect their menstrual cycles or sexual desires in any way.
One of the common problems faced by women at some point in time or other in their lives is vaginal discharge. Vaginal discharge may be copious, scanty, irritating, foul-smelling or colored or associated with itching. It may indicate an infection and usually needs an examination by the gynecologist.
Maintaining vaginal hygiene is very important for women.
I urge women not take this lightly and get regular check-ups done to maintain their health.
Some infections are sexually transmitted needing treatment for the partner as well. You might need to undergo a few tests to rule out some infections.
Sometimes non-cancerous growth in the uterus might cause menstrual problems like heavy menses, continuous bleeding during menses that won’t stop, frequent menstrual cycles, bleeding in between the periods; inability to conceive, pain in the lower tummy, increased frequency of urine, or a lump in the tummy. Once diagnosed it can be treated medically or by surgery. Hysteroscopy or laparoscopy can help in the treatment.
At times, treatment of fibroids in uterus, long term pain in the lower tummy due to infection, menstrual problems, and many other conditions is the surgical removal of uterus also called Hysteretomy.
I suggest a key-hole technique surgery to my patients where the pain is significantly less, surgical scars are very small and almost invisible, post-operative recovery is fast and patients can get back to normal life very soon.
Sometimes cysts develop in the ovary. They can grow to a very large size, can undergo twisting causing an emergency with pain and bleeding. They can be cancerous as well. They need a thorough evaluation by blood tests, ultrasound, CT or MRI scans depending upon the medical condition.
While few cycts can be treated medically, some do require a surgery. I recommend the keyhole method that has helped patients recover fast leaving minimal surgical scars.
Around the time of menopause or after menopause sometimes women deal with several problems like excessive sweating, especially at nights, hot flushes, menstrual irregularities, tiredness, bloating, digestive problems, vaginal dryness, decreased sexual desire, mood swings, depression, headaches, weight gain, breast pain, joint aches, and / or decreased bone density (osteoporosis). You need not suffer considering these symptoms as normal. Schedule a consultation to discuss how to manage these symptoms and lead a happy and healthy life.
Women are increasing exposed to risk of cancer. Regular screening and early detection is the key to ensure our health. An annual consultation with your gynecologist will help in early detection and prevention. The following tests are a must for women after age of 25 years.
Cancer of the cervix is the second leading cause of death in women in India. Every year 122,000 women are diagnosed and more than 67,000 die of cancer cervix.
Cervical cancer can be easily detected through a screening test called Pap Smear Test. It should be done routinely by all women after 25 years of age every year. It is easily done in a clinic and is not painful.
The next most common cancer in women is Breat Cancer. This too can be detected easily by a routine breast examination done every year by a gynaecologist. Any problem with the breast like a lump, pain in breast, cracked nipples, abnormal discharge from the nipples must not be ignored.
As young girls step into adolescence they may face some challenges ranging from precocious puberty i.e getting puberty changes before the age of 8; delayed puberty, PCOD or polycystic ovarian disease, menstrual problems especially pain during menses, or PMS i.epremenstrual syndrome. Along with these changes comes a lot of anxiety and a plethora of questions. And they need someone who is empathetic and knowledgeable to answer their questions because they are already going through a lot at this tender age.
Working with young girls and providing them with right guidance and support has been the most beautiful part of my career as a gynecologist. I have reached out to young girls and their mothers through various forums to ensure they get the required support and guidance.
Pain in menses, prolonged menses, frequent menses, scanty menstruation, heavy periods, irregular periods, not getting periods for more than a month, bleeding or spotting in between periods, passing clots during menses, premenstrual syndrome are some common problems faced by young women. And all of them need a proper diagnosis to identify their underlying cause.
I urge women not to ignore these problems and schedule a consultation to ensure their proper treatment and care.
One out of five women suffer from a condition called Polycystic ovarian disease or PCOD that leads to menstrual irregularities, weight gain, hair growth on the face and chin, difficulty in conceiving and/or , risk of developing diabetes.
The good news is that with correct diagnosis, it can be treated with lifestyle management, proper diet & exercise and weight management.
I have helped many young women with PCOD lead a normal life and have healthy babies. If you experience any symptoms like irregular menses, weight gain or difficulty in conception, do schedule a consultation.
Some partners struggle to conceive the natural way and need some help. In our society, there is a lot of stigma attached to a women’s inability to conceive as a result of which most couples do not seek help. It is important for couples to know that are many ways to significantly improve their chances of getting pregnant. But this requires proper diagnosis of the cause.
In the last 18 years, it has been a pleasure to help my patients experience the joys of parenthood. With proper diagnosis and counseling of both partners, I have helped couples get a joyful bundle of happiness in their life while keeping their case completely confidential.
Various procedures are done for cosmesis like vaginal rejuvenation, hymenoplasty, labiaplasty, clitoral unhooding and G spot amplification.
